A Beginner’s Guide to Golf Cart Maintenance
Your golf cart is a valuable asset that needs to be kept in good working order in order to serve you well for years to come. While you can always benefit from professional help, there are some basic gas golf cart maintenance tasks that you can do on yourself. If you’re not sure where to begin, the experts at Mikey’s Motors are here to help you get started with this brief guide.
Check the Owner’s Manual
Your owner’s manual will have all the necessary information when it comes to learning how to properly maintain your golf cart. It will help you to understand how each part functions and what products are recommended for your particular model. Keep a record of maintenance performed and parts replaced in your manual, as this will be helpful whenever you visit a professional mechanic or if you opt to sell your vehicle down the road.
Tires
If the golf cart tires are overinflated, you’ll have reduced contact with the surface that leads to less traction. Under-inflated tires are also an issue as they have to work harder to move, which increases fuel consumption. Therefore, it’s important to inflate the tires to the level that’s recommended in your owner’s manual. Also, check the tread to ensure it’s not too low or completely bald. You need sturdy tires for safe riding, so never travel on bad ones!
Inspect the Brakes
Examine the brake pedal to ensure that the pivots are moving freely and the springs are clean and well-lubricated. Remove the drum (the big part that the wheel is connected to) so you can examine the internal components. The shoes should have at least 1mm of material along with an even pattern. You can use a brake cleaner on the bracket system and springs if needed. If there’s any squeaking, you’ll have to clean the drum. Keep in mind that squeaking sounds during the rain are often normal. Any grinding noise is a bigger problem that will need to be addressed by a professional.
Lights & Mirrors
If you’re riding a street-legal golf cart, you can’t ignore the lights and mirrors on your vehicle. The turn signals, headlights, and brake lights should be functioning properly. Replace any burnt-out bulb or socket. If the lights don't work, you may have to replace the fuse. You probably drive your golf cart in areas with little to no traffic so you may think mirrors aren’t important, but it’s illegal to drive without them. Make sure there are no obstructions around the side and wing mirrors so that you can ride safely.
