When in the business of selling golf carts, most people assume we sell to golfers. While interviewing new potential salesman; I noticed a common theme with everyone that was not from the industry. They started the interview off by telling me if they do or don’t play golf. While I always enjoy hearing about potential employees’ hobbies, I realized they were sighting this as either a qualifying quality, if they play golf or as to say I don't play golf but I still think I could do the job.

Did you know golfers represent less than 1% of our business?

This made me think about our marketing message and how to better communicate who a "golf cart" is for.

Golf Carts are just like running shoes. Not everyone that owns a golf cart plays golf and not everyone that owns running shoes, runs. This doesn't mean that if you don't run, you can't enjoy all the benefits of the running shoe. For example, people that have jobs that cause them to stand or be on their feet all day such as nurses, manufacturing jobs, retail sales, etc. Sometimes just something comfortable and supportive is what you need in your life and the running shoe checks that box.

Stats about what percentage of running shoe sales are actual runners. Just like the running shoe has multiple types of customers and uses; so does the modern golf cart.

The golf cart has morphed into the LSV (Low Speed Vehicle) meaning it can be driven on roads 35mph and is tagged. The vehicles themselves must meet certain state and local laws and must include turn signals, head and tail lights, DOT windshield, seat belts and side mirrors. Some state and local governments may also require a farm triangle, windshield wiper or even special permitting prior to granting access to public roads.

With the ability to drive on the roads, it has greatly expanded the "golf carts" uses. You can now run to the pool with the kids without getting sunscreen all over your new SUV, or run to the grocery, join some friends for dinner at their house on the other side of the neighborhood or even expand into the commercial space too. Wedding and event venues utilize them to transport guests, security companies patrol parking lots and large warehouses, maintenance technicians can move about properties more efficiently.
