What is an Electric Bike and How Do They Work

Nov. 3 2023 Buying Guide By Mikey's Motors

At Mikey's Motors, we love all manner of motorized neighborhood transportation, and that's why we've picked up a passion for electric bikes (or e-bikes). Exactly what are e-bikes, and how do they work?

We'll answer those and other common questions we get at our Middle Tennessee dealerships, including what an electric bike is, how it works, and its benefits. Read on to get up to speed and see if an e-bike is right for you.

What is an E-bike?

An e-bike is simply a motorized bicycle with few fundamental differences besides the motor and related components. When comparing e-bikes more thoroughly, though, you'll notice many distinct design elements:

  • Increased weight (about 40–80 lbs., total)

  • A stronger, differently proportioned frame

  • A 250–750-watt motor (on one or the other wheel)

  • An integrated battery pack, throttle, and other electrical components

  • Display screens, feedback devices, or gauges along the handlebars

E-bikes are also highly weatherproof – but most are not completely waterproof. Yet most electric bikes are capable of handling normal amounts of rain (although you might want to take it easy during a heavy downpour).

How Does an Electric Bike Work?

When the rider pedals, the motor is activated and provides additional power to assist with propulsion. This makes it easier for the rider to pedal and allows them to travel at higher speeds or tackle challenging terrains with less effort. The motor will automatically kick in and provide assistance, making the ride smoother and more enjoyable.

Once you're used to it, you simply get on the seat, flip the switch, and ride! Of course, you'll also need to keep your battery charged, which takes about 3–6 hours for a standard 48 V battery (give or take, with 36–72 battery options or higher). When you first get your e-bike, set aside about 10 hours for its first charge in order to condition and extend the life of the battery.

There are also unique service tasks you'll need to familiarize yourself with in addition to standard bicycle maintenance. That includes occasionally conditioning the battery, oiling the drivetrain, and other simple maintenance tasks described in the user manual.

What Range Will an Electric Bike Have?

In terms of performance, what are e-bikes' advantages over regular, pedal-only bikes? With a fully charged 48 V battery, you can expect to run an electric bike all day and reach around 30 miles (or up to 100 miles with a 72 V battery). You can also purchase two batteries, and some e-bikes push the limits upwards of the 300-mile mark!

It all depends on how hard you drive the motor, the e-bike's weight, and other factors. There are also high-performance models with stronger tires and sturdier builds, primarily for off-road enthusiasts and those looking to get some utility out of their e-bike (e.g., hauling loads).

And what is an e-bike's speed advantage over a regular bicycle? That depends on how hard you typically pedal! But the top speeds on most electric bikes hover around 20–30 mph.

So, how much is an electric bike? That depends because there's a wide range of different models, build qualities, and premium features. For a standard e-bike, you can expect to pay around $1,000-2,000. Something premium or built for specialty purposes will run upwards of $6,000 or more.

Those thinking of going electric with their local cruising needs should also be aware that an e-bike doesn't render it unsuitable for standard pedal-powered adventures! Besides a slightly different frame and a little added weight, you'll be able to push it as far as you want with the standard pedal drive train – then switch it to electric on your way back and ride as easy or hard as you like!
